Based on our extensive
experience and knowledge about coastal structures, Infram has been consulted many times to
perform a quality control or review on designs, plans or assess the cause of
damages. Both in the Netherlands and abroad.
Assessment breakwaters
IJmuiden
The breakwaters of IJmuiden serve as the entrance
to the port of Amsterdam and are 40 years old, showing
deterioration. The design of the structures is very special with a 2
m thick asphalt layer as armour layer, probably the only one in the
world.
- What are good measures to upgrade the structures?
-
What research is needed? And is large scale rehabilitation really
required?
A review team made
the assessment, where Infram was consulted as expert in the
field and where Infram also took the role of project secretary. Client: Rijkswaterstaat, District
Noordzeekanaal.

Failure of breakwater at Porbandar,
India
A cyclone caused complete failure of 400
m of the breakwater, where only some armour units remained visible just above
water. The seaward slope of this structure, however, appeared to be strong
enough to withstand such a cyclone. What was then the cause of this complete
failure? The assessment showed that wave overtopping was the cause, attacking
the inner side of the structure, leading to erosion, sliding of the crest
element and consequently failure of the complete structure. A site visit was
made to detect this cause of failure and to give recommendations for
rehabilitation. Client: Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Porbandar, India
